Question: This query is for 64 yr mom who had some cholesterol issues which she has brought under control by disciplined diet and walking exercise. Her general constitution has been anaemic and acidic and hence doc has prescribed Pentacid, Folvite, Modlip.capsules.

Recently experienced slight dizziness, slight heaviness in head, fatigue and irritability, also lot of mucus out while cleaning tongue in the morning. Some tests were done and the following anomalies were observed.

ECG - Normal
CBC - Normal except Haemoglobin 11.1 slightly less; RBC - 3.63; PCV-33.5; ESR - 31
Kidney - Everything (Globulin, Albumin, Sodium, Chloride, Blood urea, etc.) meets the lower end of the acceptable range; except potassium which is 5.7

So now the doc suggested INUMIN PLUS, D3, Pentacid and AUTRIN. I want to know the uses and side effects of these meds.

Also I want to know what are their natural substitutes.

Request a patient, detailed response from some experienced well qualified specialist. Please translate any medical jargon used to layman language too while responding.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for your query to XXXXXXX

In response to your query I am listing out the uses & side effects of the medications.

1. INSUMIN PLUS- Mainly contains Mecobalamin(It is a form of vitamin B12)

USED FOR: We need Vitamin B12 for the healthy development and sustenance of our heart & brain.

SIDE EFFECTS: Itchy rashes.

NATURAL SUBSTITUTES: Eggs, dairy products, fish and meat, especially organ meat like liver, are good sources of Vitamin B-12.

2. D3- cholecalciferol (vitamin D)

USED FOR: Treating weak bones (osteoporosis), bone pain (osteomalacia) due to bone loss in old age people, also Vitamin D is used for certain conditions of the heart and blood vessels like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Boosts immune system(protects against infections) & prevents cancer.

NATURAL SUBSTITUTES: Found in fatty fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines and tuna. Also it is added to dairy products, juices, and cereals that are then said to be “fortified with vitamin D.” But most vitamin D – 80% to 90% of what the body gets – is obtained through exposure to sunlight.

SIDE EFFECTS: Some side effects of taking too much vitamin D (ie doses higher than 4000 units per day) include weakness, fatigue, sleepiness, headache, loss of appetite, dry mouth, metallic taste, nausea, vomiting etc.

3.AUTRIN- contains mainly iron, vitamin b12, folic acid & vitamin c

USED FOR: Treatment and maintenance of common anaemias (low iron levels in blood.

SIDE EFFECTS: Stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation. Side-effects may be reduced by taking the medication with or immediately after food. As a result of iron therapy stools may become darkened or black in colour.

NATURAL SUBSTITUTES: lentils, beans, spinach, greenleafy vegetables, pistachios, tofu, fortified bread, and fortified breakfast cereals including poultry & red meat, liver etc.

4.PANTOCID: contains pantoprazole (Medicines acting on the gastro-intestinal tract)

USED FOR: reducing excessive acid formation in stomach, thus protecting from gastritis(ie stomach ulcer)

SIDE EFFECTS: upper abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation or flatulence (though not very common)

NATURAL SUBSTITUTES: avoid spicy, processed & fried food items. follow a regular meal pattern, avoid stress.

Hope the info was useful. I am glad to answer any further queries in this regard. If no queries, kindly close the query & rate it.

Take care,
