Brief Answer:
Steps for healthy weight-gain

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing in.

It is great to know that your blood sugar is well controlled and so is your thyroid profile. The oral hypoglycemic agent that you are using (i.e. glimer) contains glimepiride which belongs to the group of drugs called sulfonamides, which is prescribed for diabetics who are slim/thin/lean; so your treatment regimen is well advised.

I would like to know your height as well in irder ti calculate your basal metabolic index (BMI) which will help in learning about your healthy weight.

Continue walking, exercise is very helpful in controling blood sugar. What you should be doing is the following:
-Consume 2800-3200 calories a day
-Consume more fiber
-Avoid sugars
-Avoid carbohydrates (consume minimal amounts)
-Increase the intake of healthy fat
-Consume more milk and milk products
-Go on a high protein diet (protein helps in increasing muscle mass, which will result in increased body weight)
-Add a protein drink to your diet, which has minimum to zero fat and/or carbs
-Meat: Especially beef and ork help in weight-gain, but can also contribute to an increase in blood suagr, try replacing your staple food by meat, but in controlled quantities
-Vitamin and mineral supplements: These increase appetite and will help you eat more
-Consume 5-6 small meals instead of 2-3 large meals. This increases metabolism, which will help control blood sugar

I request you to be patient as healthy weight-gain is a slow and gradual process. It might take time, but learning the trick of healthy weight gain will surely help in making you more healthy, and soon.

I hope you find the information in my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications.

Best wishes.

Follow-up: Diabetic and on insulin. Having thyroid and walking on treadmill. Suggest the suitable way to increase weight and control sugar? 7 hours later
Hi Dr. Shoaib thanks for the quick reply. As per your reply my height is 5 feet 5 inches and four months back only thyroid and sugar was detected and from last four month my weight is constant at 48.8 Kgs. I am having egg whites, protein milk, salads.but no improvement in case of gaining weight. one more thing which concerns me is pregnancy as I am diabetic and have thyroid too so there will be any issue or not.

Brief Answer:
Low BMI; new exercise regimen; no issue as of now

Detailed Answer:
Hello Samriddhi and welcome once again.

As per the information provided your basal metabolic index (BMI) is 17.9. This falls under the category of underweight, which means you are indeed underweight by quite a few kilograms. Your ideal/normal/target weight should be between 50.5 kg to 68 kg.

It is good to know that you are on a protein XXXXXXX diet, I would advice the addition of a protein supplement easily available in the market to add to either milk or water (this has a high protein content), to be taken once or twice a day (one glass each serving).

Also, protein helps in building muscle bulk, for this mild form of exercises might be required; not cardio (eg. walking, jogging, etc.), but weight-lifting exercises. You could substitute your morning session of walking on the treadmill with some weight lifting exercises (mild of course).

Diabetes and thyroid abnormalities have an impact on the fertility status, but only when they are not controlled. It is a good thing to keep track on the same, and also go in for a pre-conception check-up to a doctor to ensure your blood sugar levels, thyroid profile, reproductive system, sex hormones, etc; are all well within their normal levels. If this is the case, then you should not have any trouble with conception, pregnancy or delivery.

I hope you found my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications.

Best wishes and god bless.
