Can The Use Of Noriday Cause Ovarian Cysts?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Hi I am 27 years old and had a miscarriage (at 5 weeks) two months ago. Upon the miscarriage I was started on Noriday for contraception. I have a large history with cysts and cysts rupturing - in fact the scan from my first admission to the ED pre miscarriage showed a large cyst that had ruptured. The aim of the noriday was to stop my cycle as there is a suspicion of endometriosis. My issue is that I have been in constant pain since the miscarriage (and commencing noriday) - not severe all the time but a constant dull ache and mild to severe pain upon exertion and laying down. A gp visit proved that my blood beta hcg levels were totally gone so it was established that there was no remaining tissue from the pregnancy remaining and my pain was put down to the large cyst that had ruptured while I was pregnant. I have been since told that Noriday can aggravate cysts? is there any truth in this. I have no spotting or fever or discharge - and my last period was very painful and heavy.

Brief Answer:
Yes they can cause ovarian cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi there and thanks for your query.

An uncommon side effect from the use of Noriday (that affects between 1 and 10 out of every 1000 women) is cysts on the ovaries.

But it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

Did you do any urinalysis to exclude urinary infection?
Did you feel bloated?
When was the last ultrasound done ?

Report me these data and and I will try to help you for the pain .

All the best, I look forward to your response

urinalysis was done and infection was excluded and a full blood count was also done and results were normal with that as well.
The last ultra sound I had was when I was in the ED with the threatened miscarriage I did ask the GP I seen if I should have another one but was assured it wouldn't be required.
I have actually had a lot of consistent bloating - more so than the usual bloating I tend to get pre menstrual.
I forgot to mention the pain location lower right abdomen (appendicitis was excluded) which at its worst radiates down my right upper thigh.

Brief Answer:
There are many reasons that can cause this pain, lets evaluate them

Detailed Answer:
Hi again!

Pain in the lower right side of you abdomen that occurs with bloating may be related to more than one condition.

Most pain that occurs in the lower right region of your abdomen is a condition related to the large intestine, also called the colon.
Main causes are:
1.Constipation
2.Irritable Bowel Syndrome
3.Gas pain

Hence in my opinion,if you were to my clinic I would recommend you :

Limit or eliminate foods that may make gas, and bloating worse.
These may include caffeine, alcohol, carbonated (fizzy) drinks, milk products, foods high in sugar, fatty foods, gas-producing foods (such as beans, cabbage, and broccoli), and the artificial sweeteners sorbitol and xylitol (often used in sugarless gum and sugarless candy).

Add fiber to your diet, drink plenty of water, and get regular exercise.

Keep a daily diary of what you eat and whether you have symptoms after eating.

Eat slowly and have meals in a quiet, relaxing environment.

Don't skip meals.

Be calm.

Try to follow these tips and you will feel better.

All the best
