Can One Cough After A Nissen Fundoplication Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: hello doctor

I had a nissen fundoplication surgery with hiatal hernia repair done last friday; and I'm feeling fine.
I have no pain, and no swallowing problems; the foods stops for 2-3 seconds and then go down normally.
Is it ok to cough after such repair ; like when you swallow water wrongly.
is it also ok to sleep in all kinds of positions ? on the back, side and stomach ?

I'm on liquid diet and have lost 2-kgs since the surgery. I'm have a little sence of burning of something in the back and under the breastbone sometimes; and then it goes away without taking any pills. DO you think this is reflux again ? or is it normal to feel reflux like symptoms after the surgery; and then i will go away ??

the felt a little tight to breath in the first days and after I had cough and doing breathing excercises; seems like it all loosened up and I felt normal again ?, is this a negative symptoms like the the wrap as gone up or is this normal ?

Is the nissen suppose to take care of all reflux at all times, or is it still normal to have a few reflux symptoms after once in a while ?

best regards XXXXXXX Hanusarson

Brief Answer:
It will take 6 to 8 weeks for complete recovery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
The complaints that you have mentioned are routine in post operative period.
1.Cough is a protective reflux.You can cough.
2.You can sleep in all positions. But,choose the position which is comfortable.
3.The reflux like symptoms are routine in immediate post operative period .They subside gradually.Rabeprazole with domperidone should be taken in severe case.
4.You should do breathing exercises.
5.Once in a while , you may experience reflux symptoms. But,nothing serious. You should take frequent small feeds.Foods that produce excess gas like cabbage, beans etc should be avoided.Carbonated drinks should not be taken.
Do not lift heavy weights.
Hope I answered your query.
Wish you speedy recovery.

thank you for the answer

but why is reflux like symptoms routine in immediate post operative periode ?

and if I just feel back pain/back aches and no chest pain; do you think this is symptoms of the surgery and tiredness or exactly reflux.

feeling no swallowing pain; is that a indicator of a too loose wrap or is it a indication of a perfect wrap ?

Brief Answer:
It will take sometime to settle.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
After Nissan fundoplication,it will take nearly 6 to weeks for good result.
Previous symptoms of reflux will still.be present for few weeks. It also depends on the food you have taken.Pain killers may also cause this reflux.
Back ache without chest pain could be due to surgery.
Wrap doesn't cause obstruction leading to pain while swallowing. So,there may not be any pain during swallowing. It is not an indicator to assess the surgery.

hello again :)

forgot to ask more questions;
in Denmark where I had the surgery, the doctor told me the day after surgery there for no restrictions on food.
So I started a little bit too quickly on soft food like lasagna and I got full very quick.

Then I read on the internet about its very important only to drink liquids and soup for 1-2 weeks. so you don't stretch the stomach

this is day 6 after surgery.
If I switch to only liquid now, would it be ok ?
or do you think its possible that I started too quickly on soft foods could damage my new XXXXXXX ? because I feel fine swallowing normal already.

Brief Answer:
You can start solid food.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Liquid diet is preferable in early postoperative period.
Soft diet can be taken too. But,small frequent meal has to be taken.
Though you have taken solid food initially, it might have not damaged lower esophageal sphincter.
You should avoid lifting weights.
You should do breathing exercises.
You should avoid spicy food, foods that produce gas like Cabbage, beans etc.
Carbonated drinks should be avoided.
You can now take semisolid and liquid diet.Anything should be limited. If you do not want to take semisolid food, you can go for liquid diet only.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query.
