Can I Have Flu Shots Along With Radiation Treatment For Prostate Cancer?

Question: I have been using Hydrocortisone Acetate suppositories 25 mg.for 18 months 1 a day for internal hemeroids caused by external beam radiation given for prostate cancer. I have no side affects. and bleeding in very minor. Is it safe to continue. Does staking this treatment. medication have any affect on my getting preventive injections like flu shots.

I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your medical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. You can and need to take the flu shot. Usually killed vaccine is prescribed. Make sure, it is not a live attenuated vaccine.
2. You are on hydrocortisone therapy for a long time. As dose is low, no side effects may have not been seen. If symptoms are less, you can discontinue.
3. Low dose should not be discontinued immediately. Tapering of dose is necessary. First into further low dose, then alternate days and further still. You need to discuss with your doctor regarding this.
