Can Hysterectomy Be Done Through The Stomach?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Aug 2014
Question: I feel like I'm being torn in two. I have one doctor that wants to repair my hiatal hernia because I have Barretts esophagus. I have another doctor who wants to do a complete hysterectomy and prolapse repair along with episiotomy repair from a traumatic birth 36 years ago. I have no idea what I should ask or how to go about getting all this done. I have two more tests and see my gp before going back to the euro gyn.I haven't called the gastro back yet. Which procedure should I do first? What should I ask?when I see my regular doctor? Can prolapse repair be done abdominaly? The thought of all those stitches down there scares me. I know it has to be done I'm on the verge of level 3 I think. Things are right at the door, so to speak. I'm not on a time table or anything like that. I can take as long as I need to recover.I do want it done right though, but I don't trust my own judgment. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these disturbing thoughts that you have reported. It is not always easy going about all these decision making process all by yourself. I think you deserve help and guidance going about this.

Which of these two conditions disturbs you most? That should be the first to be repaired.

Also, I don't understand why a Hiatal hernia would be repaired because of XXXXXXX Barrett's need no surgical management but monitoring to make sure it doesn't transform into cancer so that treatment can be timely. If the hiatal hernia correction is solely because you have a Barrett's esophagus, I will suggest that you ask your doctor once more about the goals of this surgery and what he thinks he would accomplish or change by doing so.

For the hysterectomy, It can be done through the abdomen. However, this would make it a heavier procedure with more risk of complications and prolonged recovery after surgery. When this can be corrected through the vaginal, it is the best of news to any client. I am happy you fall in this category and would get the minimally invasive approach to correcting this abnormality.

Should you be afraid of stitches? No. Most of the stitches used are absorbable. This means that they get absorbed and become indistinguishable after a few weeks. It is not like cords that would stay in the body forever and you would be able to tell that there is something foreign there.

I hope you find this helpful. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
