Question: Can a piece of hot swallowed sea bass cause an esophageal perforation. It burned when it went down

Im a 56 y/o male h/o gerd. I was eating sea bass and a very hot piece with rice when swallowed caused severe burning in the middle of my chest- after immediately taking some antacids and drinking water that burning pain subsided but i still feel sore in that area. No difficulty swallowing or drinking - any treatment and any risk for perforation- thx

Brief Answer:
No perforation

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.
Sea bass containing bone with it if stuck in oesophagus may cause perforation. And one may develope chest pain, difficulty in swallowing, fever, hypotension if there is perforation. Since you have only burning sensation which may be due to reflux of acid. So I will advise you to take a proton pump inhibitor like rabeprazole and a prokinetic agent like domperidone. And avoid spicy and fatty food meawhile. Take antacid to obtain symptomatic relief. I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. Wish you a good health. If you have any further queries I will like to answer that too.
