Can Gastric Bypass Lead To The Need For A Total Hip Replacement?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: I am a gastric bypass patient, sugery done in 2006. Until now I have been good, but now I have to have a total hip replacement at age 56 and have osteopenia. Could this be a result of not being able to absorb normally since gastric bypass? What can I expect after hip replacement surgery? What pain medication will I be able to take after surgery since gastric bypass has limited the types of medication I can take?

Brief Answer:
you should not have pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
The vital salts and vitamins are absorbed from ileum in the gut which is spared in this surgery so surgery is unlikely to be the cause.
The hip surgery will be very helpful.
You must prevent post surgical stiffness by active physiotherapy.
If pain troubles you which I think wouldn't, you can take a painkiller drug combination which is gut friendly e.g tramadol + paracetamol on as required basis.
I hope the advise will be helpful for you.

I have taken tramdol, and for some reason it made me dump. What pain medication can I take after surgery as a gastric bypass surgery? I am not in any therapy at this time, but have been told that the only exercise I can do is riding the stationary bike. I do this 3 days a week, is this sufficient to prevent post surgery stiffness.

Brief Answer:
more exercises advised

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare magic.
You can start tramadol+paracetamol at quarter dose of tramadol compared to initial dose.
And slowly build it to normal levels.
Another option is Buprinorphine transdermal patch which work for a full week.
Riding stationary cycle is okay but you must do other exercises as well.
Your orthophysiotherapist will be in a position to help you out by teaching more maneuvers.
Take care.
