Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (49 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
it can cause liver damage and ascites if it progresses

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Fatty liver can be due to :(1) alcohol use (2)non alcohol fatty liver- due to inappropriate diet/decreased activity causing fat build up

In both cases of fatty liver, if it progresses then there can be inflammation and damage to the liver. Liver damage can cause ascites.
Both of them, if they continue, can cause cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis occurs when the normal liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue and the liver does not work well.

If the fatty liver is due to alcohol use then decreasing or eliminating alcohol use altogether would prevent further damage

If it is due to non alcohol fatty liver then altering the lifestyle is needed. This means being as active as is possible and adopting healthy eating habits.
Statins may also be suggested in some cases as well.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
