Can Chlamydia Be Asymptomatic?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: Hello, I was notified by my girlfriend that she has clamydia. I am very confused as she says she has been faithful. I guess my question is two parts, which is, how can I get the anti-biotics to resolve the symptoms I am experiencing. As I do have what appears to be the most common symptoms. And secondly, how is it even possible that two years in, that this wasn't a result of another partner or person being sexually involved with my girlfriend. I can say unequiviqually that I have been faithful, so I just want to make sure I am not risk for anything in the future. I am hoping to resolve this privately with a specialist.

Brief Answer:
I suggest you to get tested with a urine NAAT test

Detailed Answer:
Hello. thank you for writing to us

I am dr,kakkar(dermatologist and venereologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection. The majority of women are asymptomatic for chlamydia and a large majority are discovered on screening tests. On the other hand, males are usually symptomatic though they can be asymptomatic too. CDC recommends screening for chlamydia for all women < 25 years age and screening for older women if they are at risk of acquiring the infection i.e a few sexual partner or a partner with concurrent sexual partners.
If your girlfriend says says that she has chlamydia it is possible that she acquired it from someone before she had sexual contact with you as the infection can remain asymptomatic for long Or may be she acquired from concurrent sexual contacts while she was with you.
Now that she has been diagnosed, for you I would suggest a urine NAAT screening test for chlamydia and subsequent treatment with Azithromycin 1 gm. It is a prescription antibiotic and I suggest that you talk to your primary care physician for the needful. He/ she would guide you regarding the screening test i.e urine NAAT test and also prescribe you the antibiotic.
Having said that, all lab tests have a very small false positive and/ or false negative rate and therefore I would I advice you to also get tested first and not totally rely on her positive test.
I would like to know the symptoms you have been experiencing?

Regards
