Can Aortic Stenosis Cause Shortness Of Breath?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: My brother has had breathing problems several years. He recently almost passed out because he couldn't breathe. He was taken to a doctor, who did some tests and determined his main problem was his blockage in the aorta valve and not his lungs. what is the connection between his breathing problems and the blockage in the valve? He was treated by TVR on his valve, but still has breathing problems. Can you advise us about this?

Brief Answer:
AORTIC STENOSIS

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear,
Thanks for choosing health care magic to ask your query!
Your brother had a condition called Aortic Stenosis.

Let me first give you a brief idea about aortic stenosis

-Aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve in the heart. This restricts blood flow through the valve. The heart then needs to squeeze (contract) harder to pump blood into the aorta.

-Aortic stenosis usually has an asymptomatic for many years. During this time, the LV outflow obstruction and the pressure load on the heart gradually increase. Symptoms develop gradually.

- dyspnea (breathing problem) is the most common initial complaint, it is present because as aortic valve is narrowed ,blood can not be pumped out of heart normally ,and hence blood stagnates and regurgitates back from ventricle to lungs,as the space for air in lungs get occupied with fluid ,hence patient becomes breathless.

After aortic valve replacement ,breathlesness should have been relieved, if he is still breathless a urgent 2D echo should be done to rule out the functioning of the replaced aortic valve, shortness of breath even after TVR indicates that there can be something wrong with the functioning of replaced valve.
A 2d echo should be done as soon as possible to look for any possible malfunctioning or leakage of the replaced valve.

If possible mail to me a photo of the 2d echo done before and after surgery !

In case you have any other query feel free to ask,i would be happy to help you!
Thanks
