Can Voriconazole Be Used In Place Of Itraconazole?
Question: Dear madam/sir,
I have been treated for pityrosporum folliculitis several times with itraconazol 100 mg 1 dd for 3 weeks and this was always successful. Recently my dermatologist diagnosed pityrosporum folliculitis again but this time there seems to be itraconazol resistance!! There is no question about the diagnosis. Are there alternatives for itraconazol besides Selsun shampoo? For example is voriconazol an option in cases with itraconazole resistance?

In patients who develop resistance to itraconazole I recommend them to take oral ketoconazole 200 mg daily for 2 weeks along with application of ketoconazole shampoo on the affected areas daily. The shampoo is mixed with water and foam is applied on the affected areas of the body for 10 minutes daily and then washed off.
Apart from this avoid hot humid weather, tight clothes, oily creams and moisturisers and being overweight.
Voriconazole is not recommended as a treatment option for pityrosporum folliculitis.
