Can Valium And Trazodone Be Taken Together?

Question: I have parkinsons disease for 20 y ears and I have taken valium for about 10 years and it has worked well but it is now failing t o me to sleep more than 2 hrs a night. so I asked my doctor what t0 do and she gave me a scipt for trazodone, the info from the druggist said they should not b e taken together. what do y0u think

I understand your concern.
Both the drugs are sedatives though they act through different mechanisms or pathways. Hence there is no dangerous drug interactions between them but there can be enhanced action. There can be increased sedation, dizziness, drowsiness and in elderly there can be loss of coordination too.
Hence most of us doctors ask to avoid such combinations unless indicated or the patient is in real need for such sedation.
So I will ask you to take any of these two medications and if you get adequate results, you can continue the same. Or you can consult your treating doctor and get the dosage schedule adjusted to diminish the side effects.
