Question: Dear Doctor,

I was worried about my 8 months old baby contracting any STD through my neighbour lady.

That lady was very risky lady with too many sexual relationship. 6 months back when i returned from office when my baby was playing together with other child i saw that lady was keeping her finger in my babies mouth. I was worried if she has transmitted any STD through her finger to my babies mouth. What is the risk of Contracting STDs like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Hepatitis B&C, VDRL and Herpes. My worries are if she has touched her mouth and immediately put fingers in my babies mouth there may be saliva or blood mixed with saliva may be present. So im worried my baby may be contracted something through this.

Brief Answer:
STDs are transmitted sexually and not by other means.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully throughy your query and understand your concerns. Let me remark that STDs or sexually transmitted diseases are transmitted sexually and unless you anticipate sexual abuse (presumptively unlikely) you need not worry about transmission of STDs to your child. However, it is very important to maintain hand hygiene (search google for 5 steps of hand washing) and unless that is done your baby would be at risk of getting other diseases. You have to ask her to ensure that her hand has been thoroughly washed immediately before it is put in the mouth of the baby.

Let me know if I could help further.

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for your reply. I dint ask her about whether she washed her hands or not. My belief is she dint wash her hands.

1) Is there any possibility of STD transmission through saliva or may be tiny droplets of blood in her fingers when she put her fingers in her mouth and immediately she puts her finger in my baby. My question is whether Saliva or tiny droplets of blood mixed with saliva transmit STDs?
It is not direct contact only contact out of the body but the timing is only 10 seconds maximum from finger to my babies mouth.
2) I have read in the internet that Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, VDRL, Herpes is present in mouth. So when it is present in mouth will transmit through Saliva from her fingers to my babies mouth. It is not direct transmission. My feeling is she put finger in my babies mouth after 10 seconds after taking finger in her mouth.
3) This incident happened before 5 months back. If there is any STD transmitted will it be symptomatic for babies?

Brief Answer:
Hand hygiene is very important.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I understand your concens but I do not think that you need to bother about the possibility of STD being transmitted to your child. Rather there are many other (possibly life threatening) infections and complications that you need to be concened about. The key in avoiding them is proper hand hygiene and there is no other way out. You HAVE to ensure that she washes her hands properly (it equally applies to you and anybody else as well).

Had any infection been transmitted to your baby, he/she would have become sick. Since that is not the case, stop bothering about STDs.
