Can Prednisone Cause Excessive Thirst?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jun 2017
Question: Hi, I'm in accountability court and have had problems with diluted test results. I have been to various doctors to try to understand the cause of this but still have no concrete answer. That said, after 15 months of this court program I'm on track to graduate. Unfortunately, last week I got a positive dilute. It was a rough week as I had to go to the doctors twice . I had stuffed up ears, sore throat, hacking cough and the Sunday before the dilute was prescribed amox-clav, hydrocodine, and prednisone. I perked up on Monday but by Tuesday I felt worse. Finally, I called the doctor who then prescribed me doxycline-hyclate. A day later I took a urine drug test as required by the program and was later informed it was a positive dilute. I contented the results and turned in my prescriptions and I'm still waiting for results. So my question is, can two different antibiotics and a steroid cause a diluted urine sample?

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Steroids can sometimes cause excessive thirst which might lead to more drinking and dilute urine, but typically the levels of water needed to create a positive dilution are very high. It's possible the prednisone could contribute to this, but unlikely.
