Can Nizral Shampoo Be Used For Severe Dandruff Problem?

Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: Hi Doctor! I had dandruff problem and after few months I think it went worse so one of my friend suggested Nizoral 1% shampoo. It was under control for few days and I was irregular in using the same. But then it was worse. I mean while I was using the shampoo (Nozoral), according to the prescription, the dandruff will be in control for 3 or 4 days and again when my scalp starts itching I'll start washing my hair again with the shampoo. But recently, I keep doing that every 2 days or if I don't wash my hair right after 2 days then my scalp becomes too itchy with white scalps everywhere. Kindly advice as to whether can I use Nizral 2% shampoo now? Is there any alternative that I can follow inorder to irradicate my dandruff problem?

Brief Answer:
use ketoconazole shampoo alt day basis

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com.
I have read your query.
I understand your concern.
Dandruff scalp is a highly recurring condition. For this, one has to regularly use anti dandruff shampoo containing ketoconazole .
I usually advice my patients to use anti dandruff shampoo on alternate day basis initially followed by twice a week . Once dandruff is completely gone, one should use it once or twice in a month. The shampoo should be left for 4-5 minutes on scalp before you wash it off.
You can use nizral shampoo also.
Along with I advice my patients to apply topical cabimazole containing preparation like Noskurf lotion on alternate day basis.
Avoid hair oil application.
You can share my opinion with your doctor to get the prescription.
I hope it helps.
Take care.

Hi Doc! Thank you so much for your advice. I would like to bring it to your notice that I started off with Nizoral 1% shampoo the way you've directed to use and then gradually slowed down. Now because of that I started getting white flakes again if I don't wash my hair alternate days. Is it adviceable to start your prescription from the scratch again (the reason why I ask this is because, it's almost 2 months I started using Nizoral 1% shampoo) with Nizrl 2% shampoo alongside with the lotion you prescribed? Or what is the best you suggest to take care of my hair now? Also please suggest something for my hair gain!

Sure Doc! I'll do that and a final question. How long do you suggest me using the shampoo with the lotion and the biotin supplement? What will be the signs or symptoms that my dandruff is gradually decreasing (the indications or signs that it's decreasing)?

Brief Answer:
for 3 months, flaking would decrease

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome back.
You can continue to use shampoo and supplements for 3 months.
You would see decrease in flaking over scalp . This is the only sign indicative of improvement in dandruff.
Thanks
