Can Methotrexate Be Taken For Psoriasis?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: OK, I have recently been diagnosed with connective tissue overlap disorder. I have a rheumatologist who I have seen three times. My next appointment is tomorrow. The plan is to put me on methothrexate provided I am clear of infection. We tried Plaquenil already and it exacerbated my psoriasis. I want to understand the use of methotrexate - it is a rather scary drug and from what I can discover on my own it seems like a very serious choice.
I want to ask the right questions tomorrow, but I don't know what they are.

Brief Answer:
Your doctor is doing right treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that Methotrexate is ideal drug for your disease , it will benefit in psoriasis also .

I have personal experience of using this drug and its quite safe except that many people have nausea and bad mouth taste with this. Your blood counts , liver functions and kidney function will be monitored regularly . I don't see much of a concern in starting this drug . If it suits you, you will be tremendously benefited . Just go by as your doctor instructs you .

Feel free to ask further
Take care.

what exactly will the methotrexate do for me?

Synthroid keeps my thyroid in check. Lithium, Latuda and Equetro keep my brain chemestry where it should be. I can wrap my head around this and understand the need to take these on the long term. With my connective tissue overlap the most aggressive symptom has been fatigue and more recently dry mouth and eyes (Sjogren's).

It is difficult to find resources online to adequately explain Methotrexate for this purpose. I tend to find it in the context of treating cancer or aggressive disease.
I want to understand why NSAIDs, for example wouldn't be the first place to go. Is it because long term use of NSAIDs are contraindicated with my diagnoses and or medications?

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thanks for reverting back.

I can understand your concern , you need to understand that all connective diseases are basically due to immunity disorders hence are more popularly known as autoimmune diseases. Methotrexate is an immunosupressant so it will work at the root cause of disease . NSAIDs will just give temporary reilef , it will not halt the progress of disease but methotrexate will . Also autoimmune disorders dont have set guidelines , most of time its your physicians judgement on which your treatment will be based .
