Can Liptor Cause Permanent Liver Damage?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: i have extremely high liver function testa. I am also diabetic. I was taking lipitor 80 mg for quite some time I am also taking glipizide 20 mg. per day and Invikana 300 mg once a day I am also jaundiced. the doctor discontinued the lipitor 3 days ago. I had an ultra sound o9f my liver . It showed a distended gallbladder but they said it could be because I had just eaten My question is: if it was the lipitor can it become toxic and give me all these symptoms, and if so how long does it take for the jaundice and high liver tests to get better? If it is my gallbllder, I have no pain or dincimfort I have an appt. with gastro dr. wed. I am just worried that the liptor is the culprit and wondered if I can have permanent liver damage even though I stopped taking it, or could it be the glipizide?

Brief Answer:
not permanent, improves in 2 to 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that it is the lipitor. Statins (such as lipitor) can cause reversible damage to the liver.

Statins cause an increase in liver enzymes, very very rarely do they cause any severe damage to the liver. Severe damage occurs in 1 or 2 out of 1 million persons using these medications.

Statins do not cause permanent damage to the liver, normally 2 to 3 weeks after the medication is discontinued, improvement is seen.

Glipizide does not cause liver disease, it is not a known side effect of this drug.

The gastroenterologist would do additional blood tests to rule out other causes such as hepatitis.
He or she may also consider more in depth imaging tests.

I hope this helps
