Yes, Both the Eliquis and Xaralto, the blood thinners are known to cause peripheral edema that is edema of the ankles and feet as a side effect.
But need to be taken as these are life saving.

Are there any other blood thinners that do not cause this painful swelling?

I am an active person and need to get around normally to do my job. Will I have this condition as long as I am on Xarelto?

Brief Answer:
As detailed.

Detailed Answer:
It is not certain which blood thinners can cause such a problem and which may not; this is usually subjective hence it is the onus on your treating Doctors to change over to the ones that may not cause such a problem.
Other blood thinners that may not cause such a problem are few like low dose Aspirin and other anti-platelet medicines. Other are like Warfarin and Dabigatram.
All these medications need a valid prescription, regular blood tests and under guidance of your treating Doctor/s.
