Question: Is it dangerous to continuously alternate Cipro and amoxicillin for over 12 months?

my mother's PPO said this is the treatment plan to get rid of recurring uti. According to the urologist, there is no underlying reason why she can't get rid of it.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics has to be taken as per culture and sensitivity report

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Based on your statement your 85 years old mother has been treated for Chronic UTI antibiotics like Cipro and Amoxicillin alternately since one year .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on her problem.
1) Has your Urologist did endoscopic examination of bladder to assess the cause for repeated UTI?

In view of she having chronic UTI it is known fact that the organisms causing UTI always change their antibiotic sensitivity pattern very frequently Hence it is always repeat urine culture every 2-3 months and take appropriate antibiotic as per culture and sensitivity report.

It is not recommend to change the antibiotic alternately without having a positive evidence of sensitivity in hand .

As regards the cause of her UTI I personally think it to be due to Senile Narrowing of Urethral passage (Urethral Stenosis )resulting in to incomplete emptying of bladder during micturition causing significant amount of urine to remain in bladder what is called as Post Void Residual urine .This post void stagnated residual urine is the basic cause for she getting repeated episodes of UTI.

I have been following following modality of treatment for such patients in my 45 years practice and getting encouraging results .
1) Do endoscopic Calibration of urethra
2) To be followed by self dilatation at home every day
3) Self intermittent catheterization (CSIC)
4) Do urine culture at regular intervals of 3 months and take minimum antibiotics (if at all required)

You can discuss this modality with your Urologist .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
