I have a history of AFIB attacks. controlled by Amiodarone. have not has an attack since Nov. 2013. I take Flecainide 100mg twice a day and Atenolol 100 mg daily. My heart rate remains under 59 daily. my dr. thinks this is to low. so he decreased the Atenolol to 50 mg daily and added cardizem 180 mg daily expecting my heart rate to increase. but I am tired, mentally slugish, sleepy.

Brief Answer:
your AFIB is well under control

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for giving full details .
Basically you atrial fibrillation is well under control.I feel the very reason your doctor wants to change is dose of atenolol rather than heart rate.As per latest information we try to use lower dose of atenolol .so if you reduce atenolol to check heart rate he must have added cardizem.
Another reason may be your complaints of giddiness could be due to low heart rate ,so he may have suggested .
In my experience it is difficult to reduce or withdraw atenolol in patients who are taking for many years.According to me heart rate between 55 to 60 should be acceptable if you don't have syncope or giddiness.
You may discuss with your doctor for continuing atenolol
My best wishes
Dr.Teli.
