Can Buspar Replace SSRI Drugs To Effectively Treat Anxiety?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Sep 2023
Question: I have been unable to tolerate small doses of many of the SSRI drugs because they add to my anxiety. It was suggested that I try Buspar next as it is not a SSRI. I am presently taking klonopin but it is not that effective anymore. Many life struggles right now. How do you like Buspar as an alternative? Do you have any other suggestions?

Brief Answer:

Buspar (Buspirone) is a very good alternative

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Many patients find it difficult to tolerate the effects of SSRIs. Buspirone is a very good alternative. It helps in the treatment of anxiety by its specific interaction with 5HT1A serotonin receptor and dopamine receptors.

Its mechanism of action is different from SSRIs. The side effects are also rare and only rarely cause headaches, sleep problems, nausea, upset stomach.

Buspirone will not cause dependence or withdrawal symptoms. It is definitely worth trying Buspirone in the treatment of anxiety as you are unable to tolerate SSRIs.

Other than Buspar and SSRIs, benzodiazepines like Xanax, Klonopin, etc are the option. But as in your case cause tolerance, and become less and less effective.

Psychotherapy along with Buspar will be the best option now.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
