Can Atenolol Be Taken For Depression?

Question: I have depression bad, should I take atenolol? It works well on BP and heart rate, but I wonder about psychiatric side effects

I read your query and understand your concerns.

I like to opine that your psychiatrist was right when you have depression. The low mood and depression is well known side effect of b blockers and should be avoided as far as possible. I understand that it acts for blood pressure and heart rate but there are other excellent options from calcium channel blocker group of medications.

However I also like to make it clear that if other group of medications fails to yield results we can go for b blockers in cautious way. As we know not everybody develops side effects and same is true in regard to psychiatric side effects with b blockers. So in that situation the risk benefit ratio analysis will favor the use of b blockers despite the known side effects.
