Question: is it safe to take Advair and Ventolin HFA at the same time? is one a rescue inhaler and the other a maintenance inhaler?
my mother of 86 years gets short of breathe and takes the ventolin which lays her out for two to three hours before she feels better again.
should an inhaler have that effect?

Brief Answer:
Consideration

Detailed Answer:
hello, thank you for sending the question.

It is actually safe to use the Ventolin inhaler along with Advair depending on how you're managing asthma. As you might know the Ventolin inhaler is used for periods of shortness of breath. This inhaler tends to work really quickly within 15 to 20 minutes to help alleviate tightness of the chest.

Advair on the other hand is more of a maintenance medication. Patient will take one puff twice per day and this may help to decrease the frequency with which the Ventolin needs to be used.

I would suggest that you consider having her try using the Advair on a regular daily basis and use the Ventolin only if she has significant issues with breathing. As with any medication she should also discuss this with her primary care physician for definite instructions.

thank you very much for submitting a question.

is it typical for breathing issue or side effects last for a couple hours if the Ventolin is effective in 15 or so minutes?
