Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: A cancer was found on my Thyroid Gland 20+ years ago (c.1988) & my Thyroid gland was removed. I was on 150mg of Eutroxsig, recently reduced to 100mg. In the 1950's I worked for a Dentist, assisting with Dental X-rays, believe this may be where the cancer began??
Can I use Actalin while on Eutroxsig. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No harm in reducing dose if TSH remains in normal range.

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Repeated Xray radiation to head and neck area is a risk factor for thyroid cancer. Since it is more than 20 years, and if there is no evidence of cancer recurrence, we probably can reduce the dose to keep your TSH in normal range. During the first few years after surgery for thyroid cancer, we would like to keep TSH suppressed and hence need a higher dose.

Actalin is a dietery supplement and there is no harm taking it with Eutrosig.

Could my Thyroid problem relate to current pre-diabetic state and also high cholesterol. I considered I would be the last person to become diabetic when considering my family background, diet & lifestyle?

Brief Answer:
Thyroxine can increase metabolism of Insulin

Detailed Answer:
Yes, levothyroxine ( eutroxsig) can increase the metabolism of insulin and can predispose to diabetes if the dose is in excess. However, since the dose has been reduced now, you may notice some improvement in the sugar levels ( if the pre diabetic status was caused by the medicine.

I am due to have blood tests done in October, so am hoping the Blood Sugar is better. I have not been able to understand "why", but if it is the thyroid medication being reduced, then the next blood test should show that. I am hoping & hoping.
Thank you, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Causes of high sugars in thyroid problems.

Detailed Answer:
Thyroid is related to change in blood sugars in a number of ways. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are associated with diabetes. Hypothyroidism increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Hyperthyroidism increases metabolism of insulin and thus chances of diabetes more. When your thyroid hormone levels are in excess, that too cause increased turn over of insulin which cause sugar levels to go up. Hope that your next blood sugar levels will be normal. Please be physically active and try to maintain healthy body weight.
