Are There Any Interactions Between Minocycline And Pseudoephedrine?

default
Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: Hey dr,

I feel like I might be starting to be coming down with a cold since I have a bit of sore throat and I am feeling generally fatigued. Now I am on minocycline 50mg twice daily for the treatment of acne along with retin-a cream at night. Is there anything I can't have whilst on these medications? Is it ok to continue with them if I have a cold? Would Pandol, antihistamines or decongestants that contain pseudoephedrine or pseduophrine be ok to have if I am on minocycline will they have any bad interactions?

Would it also be ok to have Vitiam C or Zinc tablets for the cold if taken 2 ours before or after minocycline?

Kind Regards,
XXXXX

Brief Answer:
you can take them...

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

you can continue your acne treatment normally. There are no serious interactions with antihistamines like loratadine and decongestants like pseudoephedrine. Vitamin C can also be used. Zinc tablets should be taken at least 2-3 hours apart from minocycline though to avoid reducing absorption of the antibiotic. Also please note that vitamin C may decrease the effectiveness (and duration of action) of pseudoephedrine.

Zinc tablets have shown some good results in common cold (they may reduce the duration of illness by 1-2 days, which is the best that any drug may achieve). Vitamin C has not shown any such results. The antihistamines and pseudoephedrine do not help the common cold resolve. They only treat its symptoms.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
