Are Nausea, Dizziness And Breathlessness Signs Of Heart Blockage?

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Sep 2017
Question: Heart feels tight and constricted. It feels like oxygen not flowing n like it cant relax n is blocked. Firstly what started heart.pain was while I was severely dehydrated during a tummy bug I continued to take my potassium supplements and coconut water to treat my low potassium when I began to feel pressure in my heart n pain. After two days I figured.was.Potassium n took calcium n lucozade to try counteract it n it felt abit better. The next morning I took another calcium n after that my heart got very sick. It made it worse. It felt like the potassium just shot straight in there n constricted it more. On 4th day of vomitting and heart pain I went hospital who said my electrytes were normal n not.dehydrated.id sat up the night before sipping water all night so that must put bit back. Anyway I resumed my supplements on n off for next week n I continued to get heart pain breathlessness weak dizzy sick heart I tried to take out bins n after I lifted heavy bin I got.pinching bad heart pain nausea dizzy breathlessness it was very bad. I stopped taking potassium again as.id figured.although bloods showed normal blood electrytes they.still were charged up to heart. After days of palpatations n heart symptoms alot of rest n water n taking magnesium as it felt calcium stuck in there, my heart released! I was very happy n felt much better. After a couple of.days I decided to take supplements again. And after only one dose it felt the sane thing happened with calcium it shot into heart nconstricted n tight again. Its been 10 days since I took k n it.stil hasnt resolved itself. I feel extremely discomfort in my chest. Its making me feel out of sorts. My ecgs are all coming out with abnormal t waves which I never had before so this is definitely significant for me. Iv.a healthy heart n past healthy lifestyle. But.there is definitely something wrong with my heart.

My theory is.with the high pressure going up to my heart with the acute hyperkalemia while dehydrated it loosened the valve where potassium goes which is why calcium shot in but was resolved by magnesium n why after a dose of potassium that shot in n is.still in there putting my in hyperkalemia type state even though my blood levels have normalized n making abnormal ecgs.

I thought my.heart.would work it out but it.hasnt its still the exact same tight n constricted. Iv pain in back n sides n all around heart. I dunno what to do.

Is there any treatment to counteract this? Why is the potassium not working out of heart? Before I took that dose it had released but obviously there is problem with valve coz.iv taken potassium many times.in past n this never happened my heart filtered it,it never went.straight in n constricted it. N I take slow k so it releases slow id never even a palpatation wuth them before. I know ppl who take big white potassium chloride tabs can get palps as its.released at once but the heart.doesnt constrict just palpatates. Even if I drink oral solution I sip slowly n usually get instant twitches in legs or back where ever my body is transported k to cells I never get hesrt issues. Even the once or twice I took too much I got burning wee coz my kidneys excreted it n id get a tight heart once I stopped supplements for couple days it filtered out n grand again. The catalyst here was dehydration is even worse than typical hyperkalemia cox my body.had no.water to work with or filter it out so was.just charging up to heart pressure the valve n my hesrt trying to keep it out so it wouldn't stop beating or bust. I dont believe I done this to myself knowing all I know about potassium. A few times before I got dehydrated.n I stopped k as I knew its dangerous I dunno what I was thinking at all. I was.afraid of it going lower but I didnt take that much but as.I.said with dehydration its bad any n added coconut wayer to mix n its even more potassium.

Help! My heart feels essentially blocked what.do you advise here please? Can I take.something to get potassium out of.heart? I feel like a tennis ball is in my heart or like it needs to get up wind. This is definitely not.stomach or acid or gas or something its definitely my heart.

Thanks XXXXXXX

I would recommend as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms are not typical of any cardiac disorders.

Regarding potassium, I would not recommend taking potassium supplements without checking your potassium plasma levels.

Only in case of low potassium levels, I would recommend taking those supplements, otherwise, you r potassium levels may increase abnormally, worsening your situation.

Coming to this point, considering all your symptoms, I would recommend performing further tests to investigate for the possible cause underlying your complaints:

- a cardiac ultrasound to examine your heart function and structure
- an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring to examine your heart rhythm trends for a prolonged time and exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia
- blood electrolytes, including potassium and calcium plasma levels
- thyroid hormone levels to exclude possible thyroid dysfunction
-a chest X ray study and pulmonary function tests to exclude a possible lung disorder that may mimic this clinical scenario
- cortisol plasma levels to investigate for possible adrenal gland dysfunction
- complete blood count, PCR and ESR to exclude inflammation as a possible cause of chest pain.

A nuclear perfusional cardiac stress test would help totally exclude any possible coronary artery disease (considering the fact that you were not able to continue with the exercise cardiac stress test because of the shortness of breath).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

I would also like to directly review your ECG images for a more professional opinion, if you can upload them.

Anyway, if all the above tests result normal, you should consider anxiety as a possible cause of all this clinical scenario.

In such case, I would recommend trying taking Alprazolam 0.25 three times daily for a couple of days. If it helps improve your situation and relieve the chest tightness, it would be indicative of anxiety as an important cause in your symptomatology.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

My symptoms are very much cardiac in nature.

I do have low potassium levels thats why I was taking supplements. It got depleted from macrolide antibiotics as I got quite a few infection s this year.

Anxiety doesn't even come into the equation. I dont suffer from anything like that. Iv no reason to be anxious everything was good in my life before this.

This is definitely the heart. When something happens your heart you will know.

On all the leaflets on potassium chloride it.says its contraindicated in dehydration. I was dehydrated for 4 days while still taking potassium, this is very bad for the heart. I had serious cardiac symptoms very bad heart pains n breathlessness etc..

What valve does potassium go into?

If that valve was loose n 2000mgs went straight into heart causing instant constiction of heart, why is it.still constricted? This is what happened. Normally valve if working correctly would be tighter n k wouldn't flow in there but it did. Even if youve never heard of it in your life this has happened anything is possible with human body even if its rare.

Iv attsched my ecg but its only reading not ecg itself I dont have that coz it was very long.

Dear XXXXXXX

Thank you for the additional information!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that potassium is a blood electrolyte, which is important for the cell function.

There is not any specific heart valve, where it enters.

In fact this blood electrolyte is important for all the cells of our body. You should know that it plays an important role in the balance of the outer layer of all the cells, by regulating their activation and dis-activation (and thus their function).

But, in the heart and in the brain (as these two organs are very important), its effects are felt more.

The body muscles also can suffer from low potassium levels.

So, I agree with you that low potassium levels can trigger this situation. They can cause heart palpitations and even cardiac arrhythmia, increasing the excitability of the heart muscle cells.

The abnormal T wave can be caused by low potassium levels too, because it indicates the changes in cardiac cells function due to low potassium levels.

But, a cardiac arrhythmia can trigger anxiety and shortness of breath or chest tightness.

Coming to this point, I would recommend continue taking potassium supplements as long as your potassium levels are low.

There is no risk on taking potassium when dehydrated. Maybe they have written this thing, because during dehydration the blood electrolytes are concentrated (as there is loss of water) and this may lead to high potassium levels.

But, in your case, you have checked potassium levels and they are low.

So, it is very important to closely monitor your potassium levels, as long as you are taking potassium supplements.

Food rich in potassium can also help (banana, plumes, potatoes, etc.).

I would also recommend performing an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring and thyroid hormone levels, coupled with cortisol plasma levels (the adrenal gland dysfunction can lead to electrolyte imbalances).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Wishing good health,

Dr. Iliri

Yes it is dangerous to take potassium when dehydrated potassium chloride on its own. Its contraindicated.

Thats why im having all these cardiac problems.

Of course potassium can go to heart the blood pumps into the heart, the heart pumps blood around the body.
My heart felt like it would bust because yes too much concentration of k in blood will pressure the heart n that pressure could have loosened the valve. Where ever was being pressured by hyperkalemia. I had most severe heart pain n symptoms. Im talking real cardiac stuff not minor chest pains n over worry like my heart itself was very sick. I put out the bins n from lifting became very ill in my heart pinching psinful pinches to the heart weakness nausea breathlessness dizziness my heart was very sick. Eventually when I ceased supplements it all released itself out n then I took one dose of supplements 2000mgs n it all absorbed into my heart at once constricting it causing a constant hyperkalemic heart even in presence of low stores. How did this happen? It can happen coz it did happen me.

Since then my heart itself the heart is tight n constricted like a tight muscle would feel that you cant loosen. Causing difficult breathlessness n upon physical activity discomfort n pain n breathlessness. The heart should be in its normal relaxed state not constricted up like a tight muscle.

Thats why all my ecgs are picking up abnormal t waves - everything on net signifies this is only ever due to hyperkalemia. Which is exactly what my heart is in proved by ecg. My ecgs are not normally like this so it proves my theory. After the heart being constricted clasped n locked n beating all over place pinches pains all those severe symptoms I had put the heart out of whack my poor heart was sick. I put potassium back in too soon and somehow it all absorbed into heart when heart was weak after all that trauma. One week is a long time to be getting all that pressure n contraction of heart.

Hypokalemia has symptoms more of weak heart and palpatations. Hyperkalemia more tightened constricted breathlessness.

It seems no one has the real indept knowledge I was looking for on this which is disappointing. Seems docs only understand what they seen they cant take into their brain something they never see. This is obviously rare incident but its happened n now I dunno what to do to make it better. I csnt take potassium as itll make it worse coz my hesrt already constricted n pained. Im in.a difficult predictament n need expertese help. I dont want my hesrt to be damaged n im in extremely discomfort with it n restriction. All I can think of.is calcium might push it out or hsve opposite effects. Maybe in time itll work out but its over a week already n no change which is very strange. Like for eg.a nurse od'd on kcl injection she had heart attack was.resusitated n by time she got to hospital her blood levels of k were normal. She was still treated for hyperkalemia. Its abit similar in my case except it seems to.have internally absorbed into my hesrt not just charged up to hesrt n wgen blood levels go down your heart releases n relaxes again. Its gone into my hesrt somehow n now its in constant state of restriction there must be something to reverse this...why is hesrt not pumping out or is there no k na pump in heart like its not meant to go in there but it did when my hesrt wasnt working properly after trauma of being pressured squeezed sick clasped.up!! 100% this has happened. Now im stuck as stores of k are low my back aches n crampy legs yet theres too much in heart muscle n it hasnt pushed out the excess.

Hello again!

I can understand how you feel!

Coming to this point, I would recommend taking alprazolam 0.5mg 1 tablet.

This drug can help release your muscles (it is a muscle relaxant, beside other actions)and thus the chest tightness and contractions.

Usually after each electrolyte imbalance, a new equilibrium is achieved and the all the body cells start working again.

The concentrations of potassium are the same in each body cells, because of there are many aoto-regulating mechanisms in our body (cells pumps in the cell membranes) and also channels, which regulate potassium concentrations in each cell and thus in the blood (as blood and plasma circulate around every cell).

So, if any electrolyte imbalance has triggered your complaints, as it is regulated now, there is no reason to fear about any abnormal concentrations in the heart or in any other organ.

The potassium levels measured in your blood, are the same in each part of your body. This is because our body has a lot of physiological mechanisms to help maintain this equilibrium.

Anyway, I would recommend trying alprazolam, as above indicated.

A Holter monitoring and thyroid hormone levels are also needed to exclude any cardiac issues.

You should know that all electrolyte imbalances in the heart cause specific changes in the ECG. The Holter monitoring is a prolonged ECG, which can help detect those chances in the cardiac electrical activity (and also the changes in potassium levels) during a prolonged time, compared to a simple resting ECG.

Hope to have clarified some of your uncertainties!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

To reiterate I AM NOT SUFFERING ANY ANXIETY.

Anxiety is a sensation. It doesn't harm you or cause ecg changes or constrict the heart. The heart has a mind of its own meaning no psychological conditions can cause it to actually constrict, maybe a sensation. This is totally different situation. No human being can contract their heart lungs liver kidneys these organs work independantly. If that was the case people would be having serious cardiac health issues. There is no anxiety present in my body.

Whats happening in my body is not what usually happens. The body doesnt always go to perfect balance after such events as in my case it didnt. The potassium went into my heart muscle n is stuck in there causing mild hyperkalemia heart symptoms proven by the abnormal t waves iv been consistently getting. I normally have perfect ecgs regardless of any anxiety or not which I dont have. Iv attached ecg for you to look at.

I know you are used to the SAME symptoms happening in exact same way in everybody with heart attack bla bla bla but can you just consider my hypnosis for a second that due to malfunctioning heart being thrown off by alot of electrolyte imbalances dehydration etc this dose of potassium I took went into my heart which is possible contrary to what you believe. This is exactly what happened. Why is it still in there? Think outside your dismissal or normal thinking. Normally only a tiny amount would be uptaken by the heart n too much went in n now is stuck there. There are valves which control how much a mineral goes in. If are bodies are perfect like you say why do people have calcium deposits in the heart? N why doesnt it pump it out of there or transfer it out?? So its possible n its happened to me potassium has gone in.

When you have too much k in blood it is like pressure building up to heart the valve most likely constricts to stop it going into heart. I know this coz its happened me n I experienced it. Its even worse in dehydration. My heart felt like it would bust. So all that pressure on whichever valve or part potassium charges up to ion gate or wherever easily could be loosened impacting its functions n how the potassium got in there in first place.

This happened with calcium too n my heart contacted. Taking lots of magnesium undone it as it must have transferred it out of there n into bones. Is there anything that can get k out of there coz obviously heart cant get it out on its own otherwise it would have done so by now. My heart feels sore this morning. I tried to do abit of exercise to see does that push it out of cells into blood n back around body but I got palpatations n discomfort after few mins I stopped now my heart has mild pain there so this didn't do it good. This is not normal. Why wont it get out or resolve. This is most inconvenient for me n impacting my life significant. Im a special needs assistant n have to lift a child in n out of wheelchair daily. Iv never had any heart issues I done this all last year now I dont know how I will be able if my heart doesnt return to normal relaxation state n unconstrict itself...I cannot do this by any anti anxiety meds the heart muscle controls itself through natural mechanisms not through anti anxiety meds. Anti anxiety meds only cure sensations or anxiety which im not suffering from it can affect the natural mechanism of the heart. I am very calm yet my heart is very constricted n uncomfortable. Yes I am frustrated this is happening n ongoing without resolving hense coming on here for advice. I have to go back to work soon n do heavy lifting. I need this resolved ASAP. Iv been under stress many times n it never affect my heart in any way shape or form still perfect which is normally we are programmed for that. Im happy very outgoing confidence I have no anxiety or stress. Just got vomiting bug from dirty water n all this started.

Hello again!

I agree with you on the fact that your complaints are not related to anxiety.

For this reason I would recommend performing a cardiac ultrasound and an ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring to examine better your heart function and structure.

An exercise cardiac stress test would help exclude coronary artery disease and pulmonary function tests are necessary to exclude a lung dysfunction as a possible cause of the chest tightness.

Hope to have been helpful!
