Question: I'm 67. meds include lipitor 20 mgx1, metformin 500mgx2, atenolol 12.5mgx1, benicar 20mgx1, ranitidine 350mgx2, and aspirin 81mgx1. 2yr ago single stent in LAD w/75% blockage.
Recently while trying to act 21 again and celebrating a friends birthday in Vegas I stayed up until 3am drinking and smoking heavily (very rarely smoke) plus using a vape (trying to quit a smokeless habit). Went to bed and took half a vicadin as I thought it might mute any hangover I might have. All the above is uncharacteristic of my normal lifestyle. Just got carried away having fun. Woke up about 4 hrs. later and unable to go back to sleep, got up and went down to get a cup of coffee. 20 min. later I felt dizzy and headed back to room to go back to bed and blacked out. Woke up surrounded by the hotels EMTs. Blood sugar was 138 (O.K) but sweating. Hadn't eaten since about 3pm the previous day (I know--very stupid of me) nor drank any water. On way to hospital I briefly lost my ability to speak. All tests (5 total) at the hospital were normal. I'm guessing a TIA or could this have all been caused by my reckless behavior as opposed to a small blood clot. I'm not overweight, eat healthy and have been a gym rat my entire adult life, including cardio work and weights. I'm a little scarred. Thanks for ur input......

Brief Answer:
Syncope more likely than TIA.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA), if happens, manifests other symptoms such vision problems, limbs weakness, impaired conscious level besides speech issues and dizziness.

Furthermore, there were found no serious problems after the examinations to support TIA.

In my opinion, what you have been through was more likely a syncope than a TIA.

This because of the predisposing factors such fatigue, alcohol use, lack of food and fluids, blood pressure meds and Vicodin.

In my opinion, you shouldn't worry much more than necessary, but in the other hand, you shouldn't repeat such behavior because of the possibility of TIA-s and stroke associated also with your other health issues ( high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and previous cardiac disease ).

I think you should go on with actual medications and medical follow up.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Thank you Dr. Spaho. Your answer set my mind at ease. My biggest concern about this ordeal was my inability to form and speak words that my brain was thinking. This lasted about 15min as I recall. FYI, my medical conditions are and have been well under control since diagnosis. A1C's in low sixes, total cholesterol around 150 with good ratio and blood pressure always under 140/80 even prior to medication (and with respect for the new AMA guidelines of 120 on the systolic end) but my PCP wants me to take the Benicar to protect my kidneys.
Now at 67 I think I've learned my lesson that I'm not young anymore.
