Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: Thank you. My husband was treated for pneumonia a month ago, he is 77 years old and spent 5 days in hospital. He appears strong and healthy again now. My question is: Would it be advisable to now vaccinate him with the Pneumovac and Prevnar 13 vaccines and if so, when should it be done to prevent a reccurence?

Brief Answer:
Yes, he can take vaccines now.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Your symptoms are mostly due to allergic bronchitis.
And better to take antihistamine and anti allergic drugs because these are first line treatment for this.
Methylprednisolome is oral steroid.
It is given in allergic diseases but not in all cases.
Only in severe cases, steroid drugs are indicated.
So better to avoid both the drugs. If at all you want to take than take methylprednisolome.
Hope I have solved your query.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

Here is answer of your first query regarding vaccination and prevention of future respiratory tract infection.

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Once patient is improving and stable after pneumonia attack, he should be vaccinated for pneumococcal and Influenza vaccines.
It is highly recommended in old age patients.
So he can definitely get these vaccines. No harm in it.
This will prevent recurrent respiratory tract infection.
Along with vaccines do following things to prevent pneumonia in future.
1. Avoidance of smoking if he is smoker.
2. Maintain good immunity through high protein diet, multivitamin and antioxidants tablet.
3. Wear mask in public places.
4. Avoid unnecessary hospital visits.
5. Do chest physiotherapy and deep breathing exercises.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks and sorry again.
