Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

It is also known as Wittmaack-Ekbnom?s syndrome. It is a condition in which there will be irresistible urge to move the body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. It is mainly seen in the legs

 

In this condition there will be burning, tingling or itching sensations in the muscles which is temporarily relieved by moving the affected body parts. It is mainly seen in nights.

It is also known as nocturnal myoclonus.

Causes

Cause of restless syndrome re not known. However the symptoms are increased by the stress. It is quite commonly seen in patients with peripheral neuropathy, chronic renal disease, Parkinson’s disease, pregnancy, iron deficiency and with some medications.

It interferes with sleep and often leads to daytime sleepiness, anxiety, depression, confusion etc

Signs and symptoms

  • Abnormal sensations like tingling, burning sensations, creeping sensations in the legs especially at night.
  • Irresistible urge to move the legs to avoid the abnormal sensations
  • Persistent urge to move the legs
  • Unable to sleep

 Treatment:

  • There is no cure for this disease.
  • Low dose of pramipexole or ropinirole can be given to control the symptoms.
  • Other drugs which can be tried are sinemet, gabapentin, pregabalin tranquilizers like clonazepam
  • In patients who is having iron deficiency anemia iron supplements can be given
  • Stress should be avoided.
  • Low dose of narcotics can be given.
  • Muscle relaxation techniques can be tried.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Reduce intake of caffeine.
  • Take healthy foods.
