Why Is My Mother Extremely Tired, Constantly Drinking Water Post Recovery Of Back Surgery?

My mum is aged 78, she had an operation on her back - she had a plate inserted, 2 baskets and also some fusion work, When she came out of hospital she was doing well, starting to get her balance and learning to work unaided. In the last few weeks she has become extremely tired, constantly drinking water and no energy, She has had several blood tests and chest xray which have come back clear, Do you have any idea what could be wrong.

hi
i understand your concern, you should probably ask her to take water as much she wants and see if she s passing urine without any diifficulty. Adequate nutritious food is to be given. As operation is a major stress considering her age , so the body needs a lot of energy to return to normal. So give her good amt. of fluids unless adviced by a dr. not to give due to other co morbid conditions. Excess calcium intake and anti oedema drugs given after such surgeries can also cause excessive thirst and excessive need to urinate. As far as the blood tests are concerned, ucould ask ur doctor to rule out a condition called SIADH, if all the above parameters are within normal range. SIADH is a disease that may follow post surgery sometimes. Which presents with similar symptoms.

thank you,
wish u a speedy recovery
