Yes you should take care of the things which you are sharing with him.
Staphylococcus bacteria is maintained in the livestocks like dog in your case and can be transferred to the humans with sharing.
Many a times this bacteria can be MRSA strain. This bacteria is highly resistant to routinely prescribed drugs.
So you should keep distance with the pets.
You can wash him regularly. If its necessary you can use antibiotics soap to bath him.
Do not share bed with him. Its food utensils should be washed and kept separated.
Once infefted this bacteria can cause variety of infections that include skin, respiratory and other infections.
