this afternoon, I experienced a sudden dark cloud of tiny dots distorting my left eye. I thought there was something in my eye, The best description I can give is that it looks llike there is a swarm of gnats moving through my field of vision. something floating in the vitreous humor

Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist for examination by indirect ophthalmoscopy to find out the underlying cause and treatment accordingly.
