What Is The Cause Of Muscle Spasms In Mastoid?

My 82 year old mother in law started having muscle spasms in her mastoid over the weekend. They don't happen when she lies down to go to sleep, but when she is awake, they happen every couple of minutes. She went to an Urgent care Dr. over the weekend and will be seeing a nurse practitioner (at a ENT office (in a few days). What could be going on?

You are talking about lock jaw. There are a number of reasons that it could happen. But the most common for this age would be electrolyte imbalance. Give her plenty of juicy fruits like citrus fruits which contain potassium and see if she gets relief. Since the pain related temporo mandibular junction (angle of jaw) could which is a region related to ear and throat and pathology in any of these places could have an effect on the others. So, she has been referred to ENT.
