What Does Hard, Painful Lump On Hairline Indicate?

I have a hard painful lump on my hairline in the back of my neck , it does not have a head and isn't leaking any substance when squeezed. I have neck stiffness and some back pain and i'm wondering if this is a muscle knot from exercise or something else?

as there is no pin point over it or nothing leaking - it is not furuncle or carbuncle.
and vigrous exercise can give rise to such swelling but clinical examination will give more clear idea....
