What Do Sporadic Blood In Urine Along With The Frequent Feeling Of The Urge To Urinate Indicate?

I have have sporatic blood in the urine, perhaps once a month for a few months now or longer. It has lasted just a day or two. My last blood in urine was last weekend/Saturday & Sunday. On Monday I had what I thought was bladder infection/UTI. I provided a urine sample to the Iowa Clinic/urology on Monday and haven t gotten the results yet (they said after 13 hrs there was no cultures growing/but need 48 to make a diagnosis on the sample). They put me on sulfa/bactrin antibiotic (I know that is risky with my warfarin, so need to monitor my INR). And, I don t really know at this time if I have a bladder infection...but rather the kidney stones issue. The bladder infection feeling has lessened with uristat, but I still feel like I have to urinate all the time.... I had kidney stone diagnosis last November...one caused issues in ureter and apparently it came through at some point soon after that, but there are 4 remaining in my kidney. I had an xray a month or so ago and they were still in kidney. Perhaps 1 or more kidney stones are moving through the ureter at this time? I don t really have pain, just this annoying feeling of having to urinate all the time. I had lower back pain when i first felt the bladder infection coming on/Monday, but it went away in a few hours with ibuprofen. I have diabetes II, A1C is 9 (I know that s very high and I need to get that under control!), and I have atrifib, so on warfarin. I am to have a scope today with a urology doctor to check my bladder. Besides being very curious about my symptoms and issues, my concern today with the scope is....I still have this frequency to urinate feeling, will that affect the scope? I am on sulfa/bactrine and warfarin, so worry about the bleeding it could cause. Also, if there is kidney stone(s) in ureter will the scope create more issues with that? Of course, I guess I will find out more today, but what could be causing the frequency feeling of urinating if I don t have an infection? My email address is YYYY@YYYY - and my name is Debbie.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The blood in urine may be due to infection or cancer. The fact that you are taking Warfarin increases possibility of bleeding and there is a good possibility that it may be due to Warfarin intake. You should lower Warfarin dosage. Do an ultrasound or MRI to check for cancer.

Hope I have answered the question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
