What Causes Weight Gain And Smelly Urination?

80 year white female Weight gain, urine bright yellow color, strong odor , even though I seem to get a good nights rest I feel tired in the morning. Had a chem panel run earlier this year Cholesterol 196mg/dl HDL 69mg/dl Triglycerides 191mg/dl I do have high blood pressure which is under control with medication. I have been reading about the thyroid gland and how sometimes it can get out of whack. I have never had a thyroid panel done, is this something I should look at?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Weight gain in the old age means you have to check for fluid retention seen in kidney failure, cardiac failure etc.

Smelly urine may be due to decreased intake if fluids or urinary tract infection or ketonuria or aminoaciduria etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Please consult your physician he will examine, investigate and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
