What Causes The Thyroid Gland To Enlarge Despite Normal Hormonal Levels?
Male, age 77. Long-term (10 year)\productive cough non-seasonal unresponsive to allergy meds. Lung and gastro workups ruled out lung and gastro problem. Ultrasound revealed enlarged thyroid but hormones were normal. Why would thyroid enlarge with hormones normal? Is there a way to determine whether thyroid is structurally interfering?

It is enlarged when it is hyper-stimulated and its secretion of the hormone is not enough, and maybe autoimmunity enlarged, but if your lab tests are normal, don't be worried.
