What Causes Sudden Memory Loss?

For the 4th time I ve experience memory loss. the most recent episode was nearly complete memory loss. I am 74 yo. I have been on hypertensive medication: labetalol 200 m mg twice daily [ 12 hrs apart] and Amlodipine bessylate 5 mg for years. But recently I have started to take:(1) Allopurinol 100 mg for gout and (2) smoke marijuana, which I grow and have the tricombs turn color to covert the THC to the many forms of cannabanoids. I have been a Professor (Or; Ca; NY; Ga] for all my professional life and still teach , now, at a University for mainly foreign students I am very very concerned about this memory loss. I have forgotten if my mom and brother were alive; I have forgotten the names of my pets and friends. I have forgotten both baD AND GOOD MEMORIES. But am trying to selectively recall good memories , with some success. QUESTION which medication is causal to this memory loss? Asbest as my friends can recall I ve taken the gout medication before each event but Allopurinol seems only to influence uricic acid production.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sudden onset of memory loss may be due to
1 Centrally acting drugs and sedatives.
2. Marijuana abstinence.
3. Acute major depression.
4. Vitamin B12 deficiency.
5. Alcohol abuse .
6. Head injuries.
7. Stroke etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Avoid Marijuana intake, please trying detoxification therapy under your doctor guidance. Check for stroke or vitamin B12 deficiency status.

If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
