What Causes Severe Eye Floaters Long After A Retinal Tear Surgery?

Hello. I have been extremely nearsighted most of my life and am currently 52. I had a retinal tear repaired about 20 years ago, and two years ago a retinal specialist looked at both eyes and found multiple tears in both eyes. My only symptom ever has been floaters, and I have noticed no change in those. My vision has recently changed however, and I find that I need brighter light to read, including a brighter screen on my computer. In addition, my close vision is blurrier than before, although my far vision has not changed. My peripheral vision is fine, and I have noticed no other changes. I was going to just go get my vision checked and get new contacts and glasses, do you think I should see the retinal specialist instead? YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think you must be having an early cataract based on your symptoms . the floaters which you see could be vitreous degeneration which can occur normally with aging process and a little earlier in patients who have had laser done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
