What Causes Purple Phlegm After Treated Stroke And Infection?

Hi my mother is 82 & recently moved to a care home after 2 strokes. She is not eating very much & keeps having bouts of sickness. She is just finishing 3 days of antibiotics for a water infection. Tonight she is very confused , being sick with phlegm & this is now a purple colour. Should I be worried?

Confusion in an elderly patient needs to be taken seriously. If she is vomiting, she may be dehydrated or have an electrolyte disturbance which may cause confusion. It is not clear from your statement if she is coughing or not. If so, she may have an aspiration pneumonia in view of her past history of strokes. She should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible and warrants blood tests.
