What Causes Persistent Sore Throat And Neck Pain In An Elderly Person?

I d told my doctor that I had a really bad sore throat. Failed to tell him my neck was also painful up to my left and sometimes my right ear. I then realized that my sore throat could be caused by my hocking continually and coming up with a pail white substance that was extremely viscous making me think it was coming up from my stomach. My doc initially put me on antibiotics and when I told him about the viscous stuff coming from my stomach, we both concurred it might be caused by a minor hieratic hernia . I ve an appointment with a gastroenterologist...Feb 7, but right now the sore throat and pain in the neck is causing me angst. I m 83 and on a bunch of chemicals for collesterol, ,minor hypertension since CABG in 2013, and a Type II diabetic. Sore throat and pain mild in AM and severe in pm. Take two tylenol help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The given symptoms could be indicative of inflammatory condition of upper respiratory tract and it may be infection or without infection, allergic condition is likely, although no specific treatment is there, it is the self limiting condition but supportive therapy can be tried like steam inhalation, drink more water try some hot drink, antihistamine and decongestant can be tried but it has to be taken under medical supervision because of age and cardiac disease, you can discuss for this with your physician

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Akhtar Husain
