What Causes Pain In The Xiphoid Process?

Hello, I had a CABG a year and half ago and still am experiencing pain when pressing on my Xiphoid process. I cannot have any pressure either lying flat on my stomach or even when carrying anything against my chest. I have had xrays and the doctors say all looks ok. I am sure that something is not right in that area, also it protrudes and I have never felt this bone before the operation. It actually feel as if the forgot to take something out.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Xiphoid process pain may be due to injury to the muscles that attach to it or trauma to the xiphoid. Bending or weight lifting may aggravate the pain, eating full stomach also aggravate the pain. You may use simple pain killer medication with breathing exercises. If symptoms not improved please consult your cardiothoracic surgeon he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
