What Causes Pain And Discomfort After Wearing A Mouth Guard?

I got a mouth guard a few nights ago. I started wearing it and am having a lot of pain. It's not jaw pain or muscle...it feels like I have sores or rawness in the very back of my left side (top and bottom). My mom said it is very red and swollen. Is that adjusting or is something wrong?
