Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my father has high blood pressure and dementia, he takes his meds like he is supposed to. He is 89 years old, but the last couple of times he has took his blood pressure it has been on the low side in my opinon. He also suffers from COPD. His last reading was 88/56. I'm just concerned about it, he has a nurse in once a week from covenant care hospice, but every time I mention the readings that he has gotten while checking his blood pressure she said was normal considering his age and health problems. I was just wondering if I needed to be concerned.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
This blood pressure level is too low for a patient who's under treatment for hypertension. We usually aim for blood pressure levels approximately 130/80 mmHg. If the systolic blood pressure is lower than 130 but does not cause symptoms we don't usually make any changes unless it's too low (like in your father's case). There is absolutely no reason to keep a patient's blood pressure at such low levels as it may affect the oxygenation of his brain and the blood flow in coronary arteries.
My suggestion for you is to contact his doctor and let the doctor know of the readings. Please do not try to change the regimen yourself!
I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need more information or help with your father's case.
Kind Regards!
