What Causes Headache To A Child?

my son is 13 and goes to school happily but comes home with very bad headaches especially after school holidays during the first week or so back at school. We have had his eyes checked and are not aware of any bullying. We are pretty convinced the headaches are psychosomatic, but dont really know how to help

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

I think I would almost definitely agree with your own diagnosis- psychosomatic disorder. The possibility is bery strong considering the fact that he does not develop the headaches during the vacations or as you indicate, one week after the school has started. The episode is probably because (as most kids dont), he doesnt like to go to school.

In fact even adults have a same syndrome, they develop headaches on mondays, when they have to return to work after sundays.

However, I will suggest a check up for him. Headache is not a symptom to be taken lightly. AN MRI brain would be the best possible investigation for him. It will show us if there is any structural lesion in the brain. If there is no lesion seen in the brain, you can probably relax.

One of course needs to rule out migraines for him. But I need greater details from you about his headache and associated symptoms. However, migraines are regular features, and not just at onset of school. So I wont consider that for him very significantly.

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.

Best of luck.
