What Causes Floaters In The Eyes?

I thought I had a floater in my right eye...sort of reminded me of a drop of water...when I went to bed..closed my eye...a bight red light showed in the lower half of my right eye...(toward my nose). I am having no pain. I have had floaters on and off for several years...they are usually small black appearing spots..looking like little bugs..go away after a short time
