What Causes Eye Floaters?

I have been seeing dark spots or floaters in my vision and today I had blurred vision with white spots, like you would have after someone took your picture, and then I got the worst head pain above my left eye for about 2 hours. I went to an office and turned out the lights and lay down for about an hour and it almost went away. But it is still there somewhat now. What could this be?
