Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, My mother-in-law, who is 90 years old has complained of being very sleepy during the day. The nurse practitioner increased her dosage of amlodipine from one half tablet to a whole tablet in February. She had taken the half tablet for over a year. She also has swollen ankles that have turned darker than the rest of her legs. Should she request to see the doctor and ask to reduce the tablet to half a tablet? Thank you.
Yes. Amlodipine can cause ankle swelling/edema. She should also have her BP rechecked. Perhaps it is somewhat low on the increased dose which may be causing her to feel weak and tired. Given her age of 90, her systolic BP should really not be less than 120. New guidelines are suggesting 140 to 150.
