What Causes Excessive Sleepiness During The Day Time?

I m 67 and now retired. My wife is worried I sleep too much and take naps in afternoon. We have not quantified my sleep, but it is more than whenI worked. However, I used to be sleep deprived. I exercise regularly and am otherwise in good health. I do feel like napping or relaxing in afternoon, but if I have something to do I m ok without resting. Are my wife s worries justified? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is possible that you have a condition known as obstructive sleep apnea, where you have momentary lapses of breathing when you sleep at night without even realizing that. As a result, the next day, you are tired and feel sleepy.

You could get a sleep study down to rule out the same. DO you snore loudly? Some of the things that could be done once this diagnosis is confirmed are: loose weight, Positive airway pressure ventilation at night.

I hope this helped. Let me know if I can assist you further.
